How Do Festive Activities Promote Learning?

I know we all deserve a much needed break with plenty of rest and relaxation, especially this Christmas, but the holiday break is also a great opportunity to engage your children in festive activities that are not only fun but will also promote learning - without your child ever realising!

So, how does having Christmas fun with your child help with their academic learning?

1. Making gingerbread houses

Let your child cut out shapes from different coloured icing. This is an excellent opportunity to work on fine motor skills and talk about colours, counting and shape recognition.

2. Crafting holiday decorations

A fun way to keep kids entertained and help them learn about colours, shapes, and sizes while creating beautiful ornaments to hang on the tree or collages to decorate your home, for example. They can also learn about different cultures and how people celebrate Christmas in other parts of the world.

3. Having a festive scavenger hunt

These are great in getting your child to explore their surroundings. Make a list of items to find and set a time limit for finding them all. When children search for specific items, they have to use their brains to think critically and figure out where each item might be hidden. This can help improve problem-solving skills, logic and reasoning, as well as memory.

4. Playing Christmas-themed games

With plenty of classic Christmas games, the hardest part will be choosing which one - charades, Scrabble, Monopoly? Depending on the game, board games help children improve their mathematics, vocabulary, and problem-solving skills. They also help with hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking, as well as teaching children how to take turns, cooperate, and compete.

5. Reading Christmas books

Sit quietly together and read Christmas stories or sing Christmas carols. These are a great way to get children interested in learning. They are full of bright images and fun language, with stories that help children learn about the world around them. Reading festive books builds vocabulary and helps to develop children's literacy skills. The best thing about reading is that it can be done alone or as a family bonding activity.

6. Making a list for Father Christmas

Writing to Santa is a fun way for children to get into the Christmas spirit. Writing requires imagination and creativity, motor skills such as letter formation and the ability to follow instructions and complete a task, which are all essential pre-writing skills.

7. Baking Christmas treats

An enjoyable way to spend time with your kids while promoting mathematical understanding. Let your child measure ingredients and follow the recipe to bake a cake or make cookies. It also promotes literacy as your child will need to understand the words on the packet of ingredients, know what temperature the oven needs to be and so on. It can even promote hand-eye coordination too!

The holidays are a great time to spend with your family, and there are plenty of fun, educational activities that you can do together – and if they also promote learning, then it's a win-win. Have a Merry Christmas!
